Malta, a drink with a lot of power!

What is Malta? Malta is a carbonated soft drink brewed just like beer. The main ingredients are barley, hops and water. Malta is a non-alcoholic nutritious drink missing the fundamental fermentation process of the beer. It is sweet and its color resembles a stout beer very much appreciated in many parts of Africa, Europe and countries in Central and South America. I for one love it, but I grew up in a neighborhood that was close to a beer and malta plant "Polar" and the security guards that minded the entrance used to give us kids free malta quite often.
That said, I guess you kind of have to develop a taste for it to appreciate this drink. I am aware that some people like to mix it with condensed milk and serve it over crushed ice. Also, it is used to deglaze a roast. In other words, after removing the roast from the pot, all the deposits of caramelized sugars, carbohydrates and proteins left behind on the bottom of the pan are combined and dissolved with malta. Cooking it slowly will create a sauce to serve over your roast. Hey, give it a try, you might be in for a surprise.

I also love Malta! I never heard of mixing it with sweetened condensed milk or deglazing a roast! Thanks for the tip! Cheers!

You can use water to deglaze, but why would you when there are so many other flavorful liquids that you can use instead? Malta, Wine, Beer, vinegar, dark colas, brandy ….

I'm insanely curious about this now, both in taste and how a product like this can be achieved... I can't imagine how a wheated and hopped soda can be palatable, but then again, it isn't such a far-fetched idea.

That's an awesome memory from your childhood...
