A Healthy Harvest! There are lots of things to look forward to during the fall season. Crisp air, warm sunshine, the leaves changing colors, hearty soups, pies and of course, football! As the fresh corn is starting to get harder to find at the local farmer's markets, it is easy to see that apples are making their way in and I look forward to them. Apples bring an abundance of opportunities to people that enjoy cooking and eating them. Plus, not to mention the good-for-you factor that keeps the doctors away! Yes, apples are good for your heart. They are loaded with fiber, vitamin C and A, and cancer-fighting antioxidants.
There are a lot of websites that list local farms that you can visit and hand-pick your own apples. It is a good opportunity to take the kids out of the house and away from the TV for a couple of hours. These farms very often have a small store where you can purchase their homemade cider, apple sauce, apple butter and apples already picked for you "if you are short of time". This fall try to find one of these farms and add this adventure to your list of traditions. To welcome Fall, I will be posting some good, easy and delicious recipes that call for apples.
