Poached Pears

  Poached Pears

This is a great dessert, with a fancy presentation. It will be the talk of your next dinner party.

4-6 Peeled, Bosc Pears
1 1/2 cups of red wine
1 cup of water
3/4 cups of granulated sugar
2 – 3 whole cloves
1 Bay leaf
Homemade or store bought caramel sauce

Combine all ingredients, except pears, and bring to a boil.
Once the wine mixture is boiling, turn heat down to a simmer and add the pears.

Simmer pears for about 20 minutes until they are tender and are easily poked through with a toothpick. Remove pears and let them cool completely.

Boil wine sauce until the liquid has been reduced by half. I like to thicken the sauce with a mixture of cold water and cornstarch.

Pour caramel sauce over pears and serve on a plate drizzled with wine sauce.

I just made these tonight. I only had white wine on hand so I subbed that for the red and threw a vanilla bean in there as well. It was fantastic. Thanks for the inspiration.

Yes! Never be afraid of substitutions. I have made them with white wine myself and chocolate sauce. Way to go Stephanie.

...I just saw this.

Stephanie indeed made a couple of these, like a pro. It was a spectacular dish. The vanilla was a great add-in. :)
