Did you know that avocados can help you lower your cholesterol and help you regulate and reduce your blood pressure? They are loaded with vitamin E and antioxidants giving you protection against many diseases. BTW... they can help you look younger; there are many lotions and beauty products with avocados as an active ingredient!




Growing up in South America, it was always fun to be able to grab fruits and vegetables from the plants rather than from a supermarket shelf.  Guavas, passion fruit, pomegranates,bananas, mangos, etc. were an inspiration to prepare and appreciate dishes that I now consider almost exotic.


A tip for you: if you purchase an avocado and it feels like it is not ripe enough, wrap it in newspaper and keep it in a warm place.  Make sure to check daily for the firmness of the avocado. It can turn into mush in just days.



Avocado a la vinaigrette
The avocado is pitted, cut in the middle and brushed with a combination of olive oil, white vinegar, salt and pepper. It has been filled with chopped onions, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeno peppers,salt and pepper.

It could be served as a salad. It makes a good appetizer when served with deep fried corn cakes (Arepitas, look for them in my next blog entry) ...

Interesting... I didn't know any of that. I may have to try some more avocados. My only source of avocado intake is in the form California Rolls...
